An e-Infrastructure for Digital Preservation

Digital data - and the associated knowledge which is needed to use it - undergo multiple threats when it comes to long term data preservation. Technologies, hardware and software, semantics and ontologies, as well as international standards or even simply file formats, continously change and evolve as time goes by.  The risk is to actually have the data preserved but to loose the possibility to exploit it properly.

The SCIDIP-ES preservation infrastructure consists of a set of services which are designed to help data managers in preserving their data - and associated knowledge- against threats. They are enough generic to allow its usage in different preservation environments (e.g. scientific, cultural, art, etc.).

In the SCIDIP-ES project those components will be tailored and used in the Earth Science domain. The next video is taken from the CASPAR project, which is where these software components where initially developed as prototypes. The SCIDIP-ES Technical coordinator David Giaretta provides an overview of the digital data preservation threats and our approach to solve them.
