Services and Toolkits overview

In the above schema you see an overview of the SCIDIP-ES services and Toolkits. They are result of several research projects in digital data preservation and represent the core software components of our solution.

The kernel is the RepInfo Registry service, which allows the capture of networks of knowledge related to preserved digital objects. This is where all the information related to a preserved digital object are stored. We call this a Representation Information Network.

The Gap Manager is a reasoning engine which analyses the dependencies between modules inside the RepInfo network. It is needed - for example -  to analyze the effects that a change on a module (e.g. a file format change) would effect the other elements of the network.

The Orchestration Manager is a complex notification system, allowing Data Managers  - as well as users or at least other software components – to be immediately notified when something related to preserved data happens.

The Storage Service provide the interface to the physical storage and, together with the Packaging toolkit, is responsible to deliver the proper data to the user. Toolkits are software elements which are more domain related and add specific functionalities to the system. You have a full and detailed overview of each service and each toolkit in the dedicated sub sections of our website.

The Service and Toolkits have not to be taken as a full and closed system. They have to be thought of as a set of functionalities that can work together but can also be used separately: this is important as many repositories already own a preservation system and could be interested in adding some new specific functionalities.
