Since decades Earth Observation satellite missions provide data which is vital to monitor phenomena - such as desertification or arctic sea ice melting - which are impossible to be measured on a global scale with in situ techniques. But observing and providing daily measurements to the scientific community is just a part of the story.

Data and associated knowledge needs to be properly preserved on long time basis to allow scientists measure the phenomena's evolutions over the decades and enhance their scientific models. This is a crucial aspect for our society, as climate change consequences are becoming more and more evident. In this light, we'd like to share with you this video recorded for the WWF by ESA astronaut Andre Kuiper to promote the Living Planet 2012 report
